In een nieuwe video - Essena stapte over van YouTube naar Vimeo 'omdat je daar niet met likes en advertenties te maken hebt' - 'vertelt' de voormalige social media-ster dat ze drastische maatregelen nam om er net zo dun en getraind uit te zien op Instagram als die fitness-iconen van social media:

'When I was younger, I would save photos of all of these beautiful fitness models. From a young age, I had this idea that to love myself meant to look like these girls... I should work out excessively... I should eat really, really small meals.'

O'Neill voelde zich daarna nog steeds verder van perfect, maar...

'...after enough tanning, exercise, makeup, turns out I fit their standards, and I posted images like this of myself, and everyone told me how much of an inspiration I was, and how they looked up to me as a fitness inspiration.'

Ze zegt nu echter dat het skippen van maaltijden en bizar veel sporten niets te maken hebben met het zijn van een inspiratiebron:

"I am an inspiration for meeting society's impossible standards for women. That is not inspirational. Being as slim and as toned as I was in the picture is not creating world change. It's creating other people to want to be as slim and toned as I am.'

Tja, een milde open deur om in te trappen natuurlijk. Welke zal de volgende zijn? Het lijkt ons dat ze haar punt nu wel gemaakt heeft.
