Het is het symbool van medeleven en steun dat waarschijnlijk het meest op social media is gedeeld na de vreselijke aanslagen in Parijs afgelopen vrijdag; de simpele maar krachtige combinatie van het vredesteken en de Eiffeltoren.

Binnen enkele uren nadat het nieuws brak, verscheen de tekening op Instagram, Twitter en Facebook om daarna massaal gedeeld te worden.
Website Slate ging op zoek naar de illustrator achter het werk, een Fransman genaamd Jean Jullien, die de tekening maakte zodra hij het verschrikkelijke nieuws vernam:
"I turned on the French radio and I heard about what was happening. So I just sort of started checking on my friends and family through social media, and everybody was saying 'I'm OK'," aldus Jullien tegen Slate via Skype. "And just because this is what I do, I draw, I reacted graphically, just drawing something spontaneously with pen and paper and then sharing it as a raw reaction. With so much violence and tragedy—we just want a bit of peace."
Gevraagd naar hoe hij op het idee van tekening kwam, zei Jullien:
"This was the first thing—when I put my brush on paper, this was the first thing that came… It was just me trying to combine two thoughts – Paris and peace. And somehow graphically it seemed to work. I just wanted something symbolic, something that everybody could understand easily, and everybody could share regardless of where they're from… I just wanted something universal."
Zijn tekening ging afgelopen weekend rap over het web en werd gedeeld door celebs als Kim Kardashian en Cara Delevingne. Eigenlijk precies zoals Jullien het had bedacht, een tekening voor iedereen, al had hij nooit verwacht dat het in zo'n rap tempo verspreid zou worden:
"It is somehow quite organic, the way these things go—you can't really plan on it. I would just say that if people have used it so much, and if they felt like it was useful for them to share, then the image worked."
