Angelina Jolie heeft gisteren een oproep gedaan aan internationale conflictonderhandelaars: om extra aandacht voor wereldwijd seksueel geweld serieus te nemen.
In een krachtige speech sprak ze tijdens de Peacekeeping Defence Ministerial Summit van de Verenigde Naties over seksueel geweld als 'a critical obstacle to achieving women's equality and our full human rights.'
Jolie refereerde aan de vrouwelijke Rohingya-vluchtelingen die asiel zoeken in Bangladesh, en noemde het seksueel misbruik een oorlogswapen, 'used to deliberate effect, to achieve military or political objectives.'
Uiteraard haalde ze ook de actuele aandacht voor seksueel misbruik in de entertainmentindustrie aan.
'Sexual violence is everywhere–in the industry where I work, in business, in universities, in politics, in the military, and across the world.'
Ze vervolgt:
'All too often, these kinds of crimes against women are laughed off, depicted as a minor offense by someone who cannot control themselves, as an illness, or as some kind of exaggerated sexual need. But a man who mistreats women is not oversexed. He is abusive.'
Ze vat helder samen:
'It has nothing to do with sex, it has everything to do with abuse of power. It is criminal behaviour.'
Hoewel ze, heel discreet, geen Weinstein noemde en hem zo ook geen podium gaf, is het wel duidelijk dat ook Jolie met hem te maken heeft gehad; eerder vertelde ze aan New York Times al over een 'nare ervaring' met Weinstein.
Jolie maakte tot slot nog eens met klem duidelijk dat het haalbaar en realistisch is om het seksueel misbruik terug te dringen.
'It is hard, but it is not impossible,' zegt ze. 'We have the laws, the institutions, and the expertise in gathering evidence. We are able to identify perpetrators. What is missing is the political will.'
