Mother!

1. 'Some will undoubtedly find this repellent; others will marvel at Aronofsky's audacious attempts to deliver a thriller every bit as disturbing as Roman Polanski's obviously influential Rosemary's Baby. After Aronofsky's last film, the religious blockbuster Noah, this feels decidedly Satanic. Full of horror and hysteria, mother! never quite sustains the brilliance of its first half. But whatever your feelings, you won't be able to stop watching for fear you might miss a second of its nuttiness.'

- Games Rader

2. 'Apart from his lovely broken-god fable The Wrestler, Aronofsky prefers things greenish and sick-looking, like the open sores of Black Swan and Requiem for a Dream. Mother! is firmly in that tradition, but there's exquisite control in the way this director eases us into his nightmare, working from an original script that must represent hundreds of hours of therapy.'

- Time Out

3. 'Darren Aronofsky's mother! makes me regret ever using "feverish" as a term of praise. In the physical world, a fever is valuable — though unpleasant — in driving out infection, and applied to art it can suggest a work that has crossed the blood-brain barrier and taken hold of a viewer's responses. This is plainly Aronofsky's aim: not so much to entertain as to infect.'

- Vulture

4. 'It tries so desperately to be crazy and disturbing that all we can see is the effort made and the money spent. No wonder there's an exclamation mark in its title. Aronofsky just doesn't know when to quit.'

- TIME

5. 'Kept aloft by a ragged, unusually disempowered Lawrence, the picture remains ... a disgusting, disturbing feast for the senses.'

- Irish Times

6. 'Darren Aronofsky's self-pitying cinematic rending of garments is repulsive, transparent, and pointless. A grotesquely wrapped gift box of utter banality.'

7. 'Darren Aronofsky has never been afraid of the outlandish and mind-bending, but with Mother! he enters into new realms, crafting a hellish, anxiety-ridden house of horrors chamber piece that earns its titular exclamation mark many times over.'

- The Skinny

8. 'It's one of the most insane things to grace multiplex screens in years; it's also one of the most ludicrous.'

- The Film Stage

9. 'But Aronofsky doesn't seem to be exploring positives here. Instead, he's meshing religion, obsessions, and the hunger to believe in something with the current unsettled nature of the world to present a portrait of how we are. And it's pretty ugly. Sadly though, by the end of the movie you don't really care. Aronofsky has messed with you so much, giving you so little to hold onto that by the end, when he wraps it all up in a bow, it's too late.'

- Business Insider

10. 'Insatiable love and renewal are the themes of this claustrophobic, dark psychological thriller with supernatural undertones that plays out like a bizarre dream in a David Lynch movie.'

- Urban Cinephile

11. 'In through the nose, out slowly through the mouth…If you are not familiar with the Lamaze breathing technique for women in labor, acquaint yourself with it before donning your hazmat suit and embarking on Darren Aronofsky's mother! which uncoils from a murderously tense, tricky and claustrophobic first hour into some of the most sustained escalating insanity (and scorchingly brilliant filmmaking) ever to burn down a cinema screen.'

- The Playlist

12. 'In mother!, the latest film from director Darren Aronofsky, it comes laced with similar portent, and as the title credits roll, separates from its subject before both vanish into the ether. Are you scared yet? Well, how about an augury of death to top things off: the image of its star, Jennifer Lawrence, burning in flames. The message is clear: this is a film designed to fuck with you. And fuck with you it does.'

- The Daily Beast

13. 'By all means, go to mother! and enjoy its roller-coaster-of-weird exhibitionism. But be afraid, very afraid, only if you're hoping to see a movie that's as honestly disquieting as it is showy.'
