Jennifer Lawrence schittert in de nieuwe film van vriend/regisseur Darren Aronofsky, mother! (ja, met een kleine letter 'm'), over een huwelijk dat wel erg raar begint te worden wanneer er twee vreemden komen logeren.
Aronofsky ken je wellicht al van films als Black Swan, die zo heerlijk briljant en gek was. mother! lijkt alvast hetzelfde te zijn. De rolprent was nog gehuld in mysterie tot de premièredatum (vandaag!) en filmrecensenten die 'm al hebben gezien kunnen er maar niet over uit over hoe gek de film is.
Daarom, om je alvast een idee te geven van wat je te wachten staat; de opmerkelijkste reacties van recensenten op een rij:
1. 'Some will undoubtedly find this repellent; others will marvel at Aronofsky's audacious attempts to deliver a thriller every bit as disturbing as Roman Polanski's obviously influential Rosemary's Baby. After Aronofsky's last film, the religious blockbuster Noah, this feels decidedly Satanic. Full of horror and hysteria, mother! never quite sustains the brilliance of its first half. But whatever your feelings, you won't be able to stop watching for fear you might miss a second of its nuttiness.'
2. 'Apart from his lovely broken-god fable The Wrestler, Aronofsky prefers things greenish and sick-looking, like the open sores of Black Swan and Requiem for a Dream. Mother! is firmly in that tradition, but there's exquisite control in the way this director eases us into his nightmare, working from an original script that must represent hundreds of hours of therapy.'

In the physical world, a fever is valuable — though unpleasant — in driving out infection, and applied to art it can suggest a work that has crossed the blood-brain barrier and taken hold of a viewer's responses. Aronofsky has messed with you so much, giving you so little to hold onto that by the end, when he wraps it all up in a bow, it's too late.'
