Onlangs vond de filmpremière van Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken plaats, waar het hele gezin Pitt uiteraard op de rode loper aanwezig was. Zonen Maddox en Pax in een pak, en dochter Shiloh... ook in een pak. Waarom? Shiloh wil een jongen zijn.
Nu is Shiloh’s jongenswens niet nieuw. Eerder al liet Brad Pitt in een interview met Oprah vallen dat ze liever John genoemd wordt en ze dat tegenwoordig dus ook doen. 'She only wants to be called John. John or Peter. So it's a Peter Pan thing. So we've got to call her John. 'Shi, do you want...' - 'John. I'm John.' And then I'll say, 'John, would you like some orange juice?' And she goes, 'No!' So, you know, it's just that kind of stuff that's cute to parents and it's probably really obnoxious to other people.' Angelina Jolie op haar beurt zei in 2010 al in een interview met Vanity Fair: ‘She wants to a boy. So we had to cut her hair. She likes to wear boys’ everything. She thinks she’s one of the brothers.’
Bijzonder is wel dat er geen memes, geen persiflages of flauwe grappen over Shiloh’s wens circuleren – The Advocate (en vele andere titels) gebruikt zelfs ‘John’ als naam uit respect voor Shiloh’s wens en The Telegraph heeft nu Shiloh’s verhaal als aanleiding gebruikt voor een artikel over genderidentiteit. Een hoop te doen dus, om het onderwerp.
In het recentste artikel – die van The Telegraph – komt oa psycholoog Linda Blair komt aan het woord, over de vraag of Shiloh ook daadwerkelijk fysiek van gender wil veranderen: ‘It could be so many other things that I wouldn’t jump to that conclusion. Usually with a child, especially children with older siblings of the opposite gender, it’s normal to want to copy them and be like them. That’s quite a normal phase for a lot of kids.’
Afijn, een kinderfase of niet: mogen we even een momentje voor Angelina’s en Brads verfrissend hartverwarmende, non-Hollywoodiaanse manier van handelen?
