De Oscars zijn officieel van start en presentator Chris Rock besloot in het Dolby Theatre maar meteen het onderwerp dat op ieders lippen hing - #OscarsSoWhite - aan te kaarten. En dat deed-ie briljant.
Zodra hij het podium opstapte zei-ie: 'Welcome to the Academy Awards, otherwise known as the white people's choice awards. You know, if they nominated presenters, I wouldn't get this job!'
Daarnaast vertelde hij de reden waarom-ie de Oscars niet wilde boycotten: 'How come all these unemployed people tell you to quit things!' Waarna hij zich uitsprak over de ophef die er dit jaar was omtrent het feit dat er zo weinig donkere mensen waren genomineerd:
'Why are we protesting this Oscars? It's the 88th Academy Awards, which means this whole 'no black nominees' thing has happened at least 71 other times.'
Daarna ging-ie verder met:
'Because they had real things to protest at the time. They were too busy being raped and lynched to care about who wins best cinematographer. What happened this year? People went mad! Everybody went mad!'
Daarnaast haalde Chris Rock flink uit naar Spike Lee en Will en Jada Pinkett Smith, die uit protest niet aanwezig zijn bij de Oscars:
Onder andere actrice Brie Larson en Sofia Vergara moesten bijna huilen van het lachen om Chris' speech en er werd haast na iedere zin luid geklapt. Chris Rock kaartte daarna nog even aan dat het niet aan de Oscars ligt, maar aan de rollen die er voor donkere mensen zijn:
'If you want black nominees every year, you need to have black categories. You already do it with men and women, think about it! There's no real reason for there to be a men and a women category in acting! It's not track and field! You don't have to separate them!'
'It's not about boycotting, we just want more opportunities. Leo gets a great part every year, all of you guys get great parts all the time. What about the black actors?'
Waarna hij nog vervolgde:
'Is Hollywood Racist? You're damn right it's racist! Hollywood is sorority racist - We like you Rhonda, but you're not a Kappa! Things are changing, we've got a black Rocky this year! And this is outstanding because Rocky takes place in a world where white athletes are as good as black athletes - it's a science fiction movie!'
