Melissa McCarthy mag zich sinds zaterdagnacht officieel een Comedic Genius noemen. Ze ontving haar MTV Music Award geheel in McCarthy-stijl; al crowdsurfend nam ze de 'popcorn’ in ontvangst. McCarthy begon haar speech met het bedanken van hosts Dwayne Johnson – acteur en professioneel worstelaar The Rock – en comedian Kevin Hart. Want waarom ook niet?

Daarna vervolgde ze dat hoewel ze de eerste vrouwelijke comédienne is die de award in ontvangst neemt, ze zeker niet de eerste is die het verdient. Waarna ze een shoutout deed aan Carole Burnett, Whoopi Goldberg, Lucille Ball, Tracey Ullman en Lily Tomlin.

Haar moeder kwam ook nog voorbij in de bedankspeech. ‘And to my mom, Sandy Lynn McCarthy, who taught me not to fear being the butt of the joke, taught me not to worry about being likeable and perfect, and to lovingly go for the kill.’
