Miley Cyrus trad vannacht tijdens de Billboard Music Awards voor het eerst op met haar nieuwe single Malibu en hield het daarbij niet droog. Het lied gaat namelijk over haar hernieuwde liefde voor verloofde Liam Hemsworth.
Ze vertelde eerder aan Billboard over haar keuze om een nummer over 'm te schrijven:
'They're going to talk about me if I come out of a restaurant with Liam. So why not put the power back in my relationship and say, 'This is how I feel'?'
Miley verklapte verder dat ze het nummer schreef terwijl ze in een Uber zat onderweg naar opnames voor The Voice:
'I was trying not to sing out loud because someone else was in the car.'
