In een nieuw interview met T Magazine geeft Jay-Z voor het eerst écht toe dat-ie is vreemdgegaan. Hij vertelt in het tijdschrift over de zwarte bladzijde in zijn huwelijk met Beyoncé en haar daaruit voortgekomen album Lemonade.
Hoewel hij het afgelopen jaar met zijn succesvolle album 4:44 reageerde op zijn ontrouw en door het stof ging op het Grammy-genomineerde album, gaf hij nog nooit écht publiekelijk toe dat-ie was vreemdgegaan. Tot nu.
Toen Dean Baquet, de executive editor van T Magazine, aan Jay-Z vroeg waarom ze besloten zulke openhartige albums te maken, onthulde de rapper dat ze in eerste instantie met een gezamenlijke plaat zouden komen:
'We were using our art almost like a therapy session. And we started making music together.'
'And then the music she was making at that time was further along. So her album came out as opposed to the joint album that we were working on. Um, we still have a lot of that music. And this is what it became. There was never a point where it was like, "I'm making this album." I was right there the entire time.'
Jay-Z voegde daaraan toe dat het voor hem en Beyoncé 'enorm oncomfortabel' was om te reageren op elkaars werk, maar 'the best place is right in the middle of the pain'. Hij vertelt:
'And that's where we were sitting. And it was uncomfortable. And we had a lot of conversations. You know. [I was] really proud of the music she made, and she was really proud of the art I released. And, you know, at the end of the day we really have a healthy respect for one another's craft. I think she's amazing.'
Jay-Z en Beyoncé trouwden in 2008 na eerst lang gedatet te hebben. In 2012 kregen ze hun eerste kindje, Blue Ivy, en afgelopen jaar kwamen daar Rumi en Sir bij na een lange weg van vruchtbaarheidsproblemen (waarover Jay-Z eveneens openhartig rapt op 4:44).
In het interview vertelt Jay-Z ook over hoe hij en Beyoncé hun huwelijk weer op de rit wisten te krijgen, in plaats van een scheiding aan te vragen:
'You know, most people walk away, and like divorce rate is like 50 percent or something 'cause most people can't see themselves. The hardest thing is seeing pain on someone's face that you caused, and then have to deal with yourself. So, you know, most people don't want to do that. You don't want to look inside yourself. And so you walk away.'
Tijdens de afgelopen Grammy Awards was Beyoncé met haar album Lemonade de meest genomineerde artiest. Jay-Z neemt nu het stokje van haar over, met maar liefst acht nominaties voor 4:44.
