Frances McDormand mocht vannacht zeer terecht het Oscarbeeldje voor Beste Actrice mee naar huis nemen voor haar rol in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (zien die film, mocht je dat nog niet hebben gedaan!)
En daar hing natuurlijke een speech aan. En wát voor een. Frances McDormand vroeg álle vrouwelijke bezoekers in de zaal op te staan en sloeg tussendoor precies de spijker op de kop, toen ze terloops 'Meryl, if you do it everyone else will,' liet vallen. Ha! McDormand:
'If I may be so honored to have all the female nominees in every category stand with me in this room tonight. The actors—Meryl [Streep], if you do it everyone else will—the filmmakers, the producers, the directors, the writers, the cinematographers, the composers, the song writers, the designers. Come on! Okay, look around everybody, look around, ladies and gentleman because we all have stories to tell and projects we need financed. Don't talk to us about it at the parties tonight. Invite us into your office in a couple days or you can come to ours, whichever suits you best, and we can tell you all about them.'
Maar belangrijker nog: op het einde van haar speech slaat ze nog een keer de spijker op de kop, door de Oscar naast zich neer te zetten, te laten zien hoe klein zo'n beeldje eigenlijk is vergeleken met een mens (Frances McDormand) en met twee woorden af te sluiten: Inclusion Rider. En dat is geen straattaal; het is heel formele taal. In de filmindustrie kun je als acteur/actrice namelijk een zogenoemde 'Inclusion Rider' laten opnemen in een filmcontract, dat stelt dat de film zorg voor moet dragen dat de cast divers en inclusief is. Is dat aantoonbaar niet het geval, dan heb je als acteur/actrice middels die Inclusion Rider het recht om uit de film te stappen.
