Goed, Lily Allen is natuurlijk meester in het combineren van sarcasme, popmuziek en feminisme, waarvan briljante singles als The Fear, Knock 'Em Out en het recente Hard Out Here het bewijs zijn. Maar toch, wij konden er bij de eerste view van Lily Allens splinternieuwe single en video Sheezus juist, een verwijzing naar Kanye Wests Yeezus even geen chocola van maken.
Om te beginnen is er een heel couplet gewijd aan Allens period: It makes me angry, Im serious, But then again, Im just about to get my period, Periods, we all get periods, Every month, yo, thats what the theory is, Its human nature, another cycle. En dan is er nog het refrein. RiRi isn't scared of Katy Perry's roaring, Queen B's going back to the drawing, Lorde smells blood, yeah, she's about to slay you, Kid ain't one to fuck with when she's only on her debut, We're all watching Gaga, L-O-L-O, ah-ha, Dying for the art so, really, she's a martyr, The second best will never cut it for the divas, Give me that crown, bitch, I wanna be Sheezus. Ook al zon hersenkraker, met al dat gerefereer aan pop musics finest. Want wat bedoélt ze nou? Wil ze echt een Sheezus zijn? Verwarrende teksten, kortom.
MAAR WAARÓM IS ER EEN SHEEZUS?
Máár! Context biedt hier soelaas en laat alles op zijn plek vallen. Want, zo blijkt, het hele refrein is gewoon een pamflet tegen de queen-cultuur in de popmuziek en stelt de vraag waaróm er eigenlijk een Sheezus moet zijn. Allen in een interview met MTV News: Women tend to be kind of played off against each other. The way I read it is, you know, theres a queen and everyone else is in their kind of slipstream, or whatever. And I guess what Im trying to say is that we could all be Sheezus.
En dat period-couplet, daar zit dus ook een gedachte achter. I think that 'period' is going to be my 'surfboard' with Beyoncé. People will wear sweatshirts to my concerts that are just going to say 'period', zei Allen onlangs in een interview met Rolling Stone.
Met een enorme korrel zout is een en ander dus heel goed te begrijpen, wat van Sheezus een single maakt zoals we van Lily Allen gewend zijn. Plus: vooral de line were all watching Gaga, L-O-L-O ah-ha zingt hartstikke lekker weg. Snel zelf hieronder luisteren, dus!
