Zoë Kravitz praat voor het eerst over haar eetstoornissen

Zoë Kravitz schittert in het nieuwe nummer van Complex magazine en onthult daar dat ze tot twee jaar geleden kampte met zowel anorexia als boulimia. De 26-jarige actrice en zangeres vertelt dat het dan ook niet altijd makkelijk was om in de spotlights te staan vanaf een jonge leeftijd, door haar superster ouders, Lenny Kravitz en Lisa Bonet:

'I had a really hard time when I was 16, 17, 18. I started with the eating disorder in high school… Just a hard time loving myself. I think it was part of being a woman, and being surrounded by fame... I don't think it was about the fame, but I think it was definitely about being around that world, seeing that world. I felt pressured. My mother's a beautiful woman, and I think, in some way, I felt intimidated by that sometimes.'

Maar hoe knap haar moeder ook is, Zoë vertelt dat ook Lisa te maken had met flink wat onzekerheden:'Everyone sees themselves in some weird, obscure way. People meet her and don't know what to do with themselves, but she doesn't know how f*cking cool she is. Or what she means to the rest of the world.'

Zoë Kravitz vertelt bovendien heel eerlijk dat het nog altijd moeilijk is om niet weer extreem te gaan lijnen. Toen ze in 2013 de rol van een meisje met anorexia moest spelen voor de film The Road Within, sloeg ze weer door en woog ze op een gegeven moment nog maar 40 kilo:

'I wasn't disciplined enough to play the part without letting her demons get the best of me. My parents got really scared for me to go back down that road. It was f*cked up, man. You could see my rib cage. I was just trying to lose more weight for the film but I couldn't see: You're there. Stop. It was scary.'

Na de opnames voor de film werd Zoë heel erg ziek, en tijdens Oud & Nieuw besloot ze dat het genoeg was:

'I just felt it was different. I don't know if a f*cking spirit came over me and said: ''You have to stop.'' I feel like something has left my body, like some part of me is gone now, something that was making me so insecure. And it feels amazing.'
