Hoe echt de schrijvers van Sex and the City het ook wilden houden - en volgens Cynthia Nixon echt heel, héél echt... -, ook zij konden een fairytale ending niet weerstaan.

Zoals we allemaal weten, ondanks iedere aanwijzing dat Mr. Big emotioneel niet bereikbaar was en een enorme bindingsangst had (en dat Aidan de liefste, meest perfecte en beste man ooit was), eindigde Carrie Bradshaw tóch met John James Preston in de laatste aflevering van de befaamde HBO-show. Een bittersweet, maar ook frustrerend moment voor ons allen.

De onafhankelijke single vrouw, wiens garderobe we maar al te graag wilden hebben en wiens struggles verdacht bekend voorkwamen. Die vrouw, die eindigt met de man die haar eindeloos veel liefdesverdriet deed? En we moesten geloven dat het plots happily ever after voor de twee was? Ehhh...

Deze opmerkelijke en plotseling shift naar rom-com terrein zit niet alleen ons dwars, zo blijkt nu. Ook Sex and the City-maker Darren Star vond het einde met Carrie en Mr. Big maar niets. Hij vertelt aan Kindle Singles Interview:

'I didn't break those last episodes. If you're empowering other people to write and produce your show, at a certain point, you've got to let them follow their vision. But I think the show ultimately betrayed what it was about, which was that women don't ultimately find happiness from marriage. Not that they can't. But the show initially was going off script from the romantic comedies that had come before it. That's what had made women so attached. At the end, it became a conventional romantic comedy… But unless you're there to write every episode, you're not going to get the ending you want.'

Als dit alleen al zijn mening is over de laatste afleveringen van de serie, zijn we benieuwd wat-ie van de tenenkrommende verhaallijnen van de Sex and the City-films vindt...
