Iedereen heeft er eentje in z'n omgeving: de hopeloze romanticus, die denkt dat je je grote liefde tegen het lijf loopt door zoiets als van een stoepje vallen, waarna hij toevallig - maar natuurlijk ook gewoon door het lot - in de buurt is om je ter plekke op te vangen.

Herkenbaar, omdat je zelf zo iemand bent? Goed nieuws. Laat je niet van de wijs brengen door vrienden die vinden dat je wat nuchterder moet worden, want nieuw onderzoek wijst uit dat 't zo erg nog niet is om romantisch te zijn.

Deze deze studie, gepubliceerd in Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, stelt:

'having romantic beliefs and romantic expectations is not necessarily a problem.'

Sarah Vannier, auteur van het onderzoek, stelt dat de romanticus hogere verwachtingen van de liefde heeft en die gemiddeld ook vaker ziet uitkomen dan de niet-romanticus. Of dat ligt aan de roze bril die een romanticus vaker op heeft, of aan dat-ie ook écht heel succesvol is in de liefde. Of, in haar eigen woorden:

'People with romantic beliefs did have higher expectations, but they were also more likely to see their partner as meeting those expectations. It is hard to say whether this is because they are seeing their partner through rose-colored glasses — e.g., their beliefs about Prince Charming make them think their partner is Prince Charming, even if other people might think that he is a frog — or if this is because they found and chose a partner who meets their expectations.'
