Jaren (járen) heeft Harry Styles zijn lippen stijf op elkaar gehouden over zijn veelbesproken romance met Taylor Swift. De twee gingen niet echt op de gezelligste manier uit elkaar, toen Swift gefotografeerd werd terwijl ze hun Nieuwjaarsvakantie eerder alleen verliet op een boot in januari 2013:
Taylor Swift nam wraak door op haar album 1989 - dat in 2014 uitkwam - meerdere nummers aan de relatie te wijden, waaronder Out of the Woods en Style. Terwijl ze het nieuwe album promootte praatte ze honderduit over de relatie en liet onder andere weten:
'The number one feeling I felt in the whole relationship was anxiety. Because it felt very fragile, it felt very tentative… I think a lot of relationships can be very solid and that's kind of what you hope for, for it to be solid and healthy but that's not always what you get. And it doesn't mean that it's not special and extraordinary just to have a relationship that's fragile and somehow meaningful in that fragility.'
Harry Styles en Taylor Swift zijn geen vrienden meer, maar in een nieuw interview met Rolling Stone heeft Harry Styles alleen maar aardige woorden over voor zijn ex. Hij praat voor het eerst over die veelbesproken periode in zijn leven en vertelt dat wanneer hij naar foto's van zichzelf met Taylor kijkt, vooral die paparazzifoto van de twee op een date in Central Park, hij zich herinnert dat het enorm lastig was:
'I think: Relationships are hard, at any age. And adding in that you don't really understand exactly how it works when you're 18, trying to navigate all that stuff didn't make it easier. I mean, you're a little bit awkward to begin with. You're on a date with someone you really like. It should be that simple, right? It was a learning experience for sure. But at the heart of it - I just wanted it to be a normal date.'
Over het feit dat Swift Out of the Woods en Styles over hem schreef, is-ie casual:
'I mean, I don't know if they're about me or not, but the issue is, she's so good, they're bloody everywhere. I write from my experiences; everyone does that. I'm lucky if everything [we went through] helped create those songs. That's what hits your heart. That's the stuff that's hardest to say, and it's the stuff I talk least about. That's the part that's about the two people. I'm never going to tell anybody everything.'
Op de vraag of hij ooit aan Taylor Swift heeft verteld dat-ie de nummers mooi vond, zegt Harry:
'Yes and no. She doesn't need me to tell her they're great. They're great songs... It's the most amazing unspoken dialogue ever.'
Harry Styles zei daarna dat-ie het volgende tegen Taylor Swift zou willen zeggen:
'Certain things don't work out. There's a lot of things that can be right, and it's still wrong. In writing songs about stuff like that, I like tipping a hat to the time together. You're celebrating the fact it was powerful and made you feel something, rather than 'this didn't work out, and that's bad.' And if you run into that person, maybe it's awkward, maybe you have to get drunk...but you shared something. Meeting someone new, sharing those experiences, it's the best shit ever. So thank you.'
Daarnaast onthulde hij dat zijn meer recente bekende ex, Kendall Jenner (zo speculeert Rolling Stone tenminste), een groot deel uitmaakt van zijn album:
'Sometimes you want to tip the hat, and sometimes you just want to give them the whole cap...and hope they know it's just for them.'
