Voor wie het nog niet wist: Meghan Markle was een Kappa Kappa Gamma aan de Northwestern Universiteit. Daar is de studentenvereniging natuurlijk enorm trots op en na het verlovingsnieuws van afgelopen maandag hebben ze nu dan ook haar tweedejaarsportret vrijgegeven:
Meghan Markle was blijkbaar een voorbeeldige studente bij de universiteit in Illinois. Ze was geïnteresseerd in Grieks en maakte een backpacktrip door Europa tijdens de spring breaks. Daarnaast was ze volgens insiders een echte theaternerd en ze deed dan ook een dubbele master in theater in internationale relaties.
In 2013 vertelde ze nog aan de Amerikaanse Marie-Claire:
'I knew I wanted to do acting, but I hated the idea of being this cliche — a girl from LA who decides to be an actress. I wanted more than that, and I had always loved politics, so I ended up changing my major completely, and double-majoring in theater and international relations.'
Een van haar voormalige leraren, professor Harvey Young, herinnert zich de actrice nog goed. Hij vertelt aan ABC:
'I taught her in a small, advanced undergraduate seminar. There were only eight students in the class. We sat in a circle. It was on contemporary black theater. She was one of those people that I would highlight for students. I would say. "This is a possibility. This is a path you can pursue if you work hard."'
Naast haar passie voor theater, werd op Northwestern ook Meghans interesse in activisme aangewakkerd. Young vertelt:
'In my memories of Meghan at Northwestern, she was very clear about the need to think about the experiences of people who are not only biracial but of people of color. She was mindful of the need for gender equality and the importance of championing for women's rights.'
