Het Australische topmodel Ruby Jean Wilson - ze loopt en poseert onder andere voor Marc Jacobs en Vivienne Westwood - schrikte de modewereld op door tijdens een fashionshoot weg te lopen.
Ruby kwam er toen ze in de make-upstoel ging zitten achter dat haar modellenbureau haar voor een lookbook voor items van bont had geboekt, en schrok zich toen een hoedje. Ze laat op haar facebookpagina weten dat ze enorm twijfelde of ze op moest stappen, omdat alles al in kannen en kruiken was:
'Today I found myself in a difficult position where (through no fault of my agents) I got to a shoot to discover it was a fur look book. After sitting for a while having my makeup done and thinking to myself that it was too late to step down and not wanting to inconvenience the whole team by leaving, I decided that it wasn't something I wanted to be a part of. I explained the situation and left the shoot.'
Ruby maakte hiermee een sterk statement tegen het gebruik van bont, en haar post gaat inmiddels viral. Ze schrijft verder:
'As anxious as I felt making this decision it feels better to have stood against something that I disagree with and believe is outdated and unnecessary than to have stayed for financial gain. I don't believe that being in the fashion industry means that you are at the whim of designers or whomever is paying you. We have to collaboratively decide what's not cool anymore. In fact, I think as creatives we urgently need to start to say no to things like fur.'
Het is niet de eerste keer dat Ruby Jean Wilson zich uitspreekt tegen bont. Het model zet zich in voor verschillende dierenrechtenorganisaties en is veganist:
Ze moedigt via Facebook iedereen aan om een vuist te maken voor de dingen waar je voor staat:
'I urge my creative friends on Facebook to also think about what they choose to support and to realise that if we don't stand up and say no as models/designers/creatives things won't change.'
