De vrouw die Valentino Garavani de opmerkelijk eerlijke quotes wist te ontlokken is de Amerikaanse Fern Mallis, voormalig uitvoerend directeur van de Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) en oprichtster van de New York Fashion Week. Voor haar Fashion Icons-serie interviewt ze on stage levende legendes (wijlen Oscar de la Renta, Bill Cunningham, Bruce Weber) uit de modewereld.
Valentino was haar eerste non-Amerikaanse gesprekspartner en dat bleek een gewillige klant. ‘I'm going to tell you which underwear I'm wearing!’ grapte de designer zelfs. En inderdaad: wat volgde was een verrassend openhartig interview. We verzamelden zijn meest opvallende quotes.
Over de jaren tachtig, die hij maar vulgair vond:
‘I hated those dresses in the '80s, they were out of proportion with shoulders that didn't belong to the fit, they were all terrible, terrible! The shoes were not good — I never liked it.’
Over zijn rol in The Devil Wears Prada:
‘For me it was quite simple to do that scene because I do it eight times a year. To be there, to say, “Hello, how are you, you like the collection?”’
Over zijn schetsboek dat hij totaal niet zegt te missen:
‘You know, the way we used to work now is more difficult, because life is changing, people work in another way. What I did and what many other colleagues of mine did doesn't exist anymore.’
