De tijd dat we al onze mom jeans, witte sneakers, sportsokken en badslippers weer moeten bergen, komt misschien sneller dan je had gedacht. De trendwatchers die de term 'normcore' uitvonden (K-Hole, heten ze), zien namelijk iets nieuws dat op het punt staat te gebeuren:

Je denkt: Bette Midler in Hocus Pocus. Dit, dus:

Maar da's dus niet precies wat K-Hole bedoelt. Chaos magic gaat meer over het spirituele; zoals bijvoorbeeld het concept van The Secret, maar dan weer niet per se de esthetiek van The Secret. In K-Hole's nieuwe rapport, wordt de term zo omschreven:
'Chaos Magic is what happens after will. It’s the antidote to the tryhard problems that come with overthinking everything. If you really want change you have to go deeper.'
Emily Segal, medeoprichter van K-Hole, aan Vogue.com, over normcore:
'Normcore itself became a kind of maxed-out signifier. I think where we found ourselves was thinking, Where do you go from here?'
Chaos magic, dus. Een van de grootste verschillen tussen normcore en chaos magic, is dat normcore ging over opgaan in de massa, omdat we er allemaal besloten even neutraal en bijna sullig uit te zien. Chaos magic grijpt terug op je eigen identiteit, je eigen persoon en je eigen gevoel. K-Hole voegt er tot slot nog aan toe:
'Chaos Magic creates realities which are temporary and subjective. It’s not a tool for changing others — it’s a tool for changing yourself. You opt into whatever belief system you think will help you reach your intended goals: Wall Street’s Confidence Fairy, your Fairy Godmother, or the Church of Agape.'
Je kunt maar beter gewaarschuwd zijn - hou die vinger aan de pols, wat je mom jeans betreft.
