'Christopher Bailey is hanging up his Burberry trench', zo bericht WWD zojuist. De creative director en tevens CEO van het grootste Britse label in de high end modebranche stopt ermee.
'As Burberry begins the next decade of its journey, Christopher has concluded that after 17 years it will be the right time for him to pursue new creative projects,' verklaart het huis in een officieel statement. Tot en met maart 2018 zal hij nog officieel in functie blijven, en ook daarna, tot eind 2018, blijft hij het team nog bijstaan. 'He will provide his full support to chief executive officer Marco Gobbetti and the team on the transition until 31 December 2018.' Maar daarna zal het toch echt over en uit zijn.
Burberry omschrijft Bailey als de driving force achter Burberry's transformatie sinds zijn aanstelling in 2001. En terecht. De man bouwde het merk uit van een outerwear brand tot een van de grootste luxelabels ter wereld. Incluis grootse shows (waarin hij eigenhandig immer mode en muziek samenbracht door allerlei grote artiesten te integreren), campagnes, lanceringen en de bijbehorende verkoopcijfers.

'It has been the great privilege of my working life to be at Burberry, working alongside and learning from such an extraordinary group of people over the last 17 years,' aldus Bailey himself in een statement. 'Burberry encapsulates so much of what is great about Britain. As an organization, it is creative, innovative and outward looking.'
Ondanks zijn aanstaande vertrek gelooft Bailey dat er ook in de toekomst nog veel te halen valt. 'I do truly believe, however, that Burberry's best days are still ahead of her and that the company will go from strength to strength with the strategy we have developed and the exceptional talent we have in place led by Marco. I am excited to pursue new creative projects but remain fully committed to the future success of this magnificent brand and to ensuring a smooth transition.'
Over op welke 'new creative projects' Bailey zich in de toekomst zal storten liet hij zich nog niet uit.
