Traditiegetrouw was de eer aan Marc Jacobs om, gisteravond, New York Fashion af te sluiten. Hij koos voor een dressed-up sportswear-collectie, geinspireerd op - jawel - hiphop. De documentaire Hip-Hop Evolution om precies te zijn.
Legde-ie even zelf uit in de show notes:
'Several months ago I watched a documentary called Hip-Hop Evolution. The 4-part series chronicles the poignant and pivotal cultural movement that reshaped and redefined the landscape of music, which gave way to a whole new language of style.
As a born and bred New Yorker, it was during my time at the High School of Art and Design when I began to see and feel the influence of hip-hop on other music as well as art and style. This collection is my representation of the well-studied dressing up of casual sportswear. It is an acknowledgement and gesture of respect for the polish and consideration applied to fashion from a generation that will forever be the foundation of youth culture street style.'

In Park Avenue Armory, waar Jacobs zijn show gaf, liepen modellen de enorme lengte van de hele venue langs het publiek, dat in slechts twee lange front rows was weggezet (en, net als bij Kanye's Yeezy Season 5, geen foto's mocht maken) en vervolgens direct door naar buiten, de straat op, waar de fotografen stonden te wachten.
'A simple presentation of all these thoughts culminating in an urban landscape documented by legendary New York photographer Joel Meyerowitz,' liet Jacobs over zijn keuze voor decor.
Over op de kleding. Jacobs koos voor een kleurenpalet van warme neutrale tinten zoals - we quoten de designer - 'camel, ginger, brown, gold, red and maroon'. Silhouetten leende hij uit de wereld van sportkleding.
Zelfs de accessoires waren casual en praktisch, evenals de schoenen (kalfsleren laarsjes en platformloafers).
'Pumped up hats by Stephen Jones take their cues from the haberdashery and elegance of Andre 3000,' aldus Jacobs over de opvallende hoge hoofddeksels die bijna al zijn modellen droegen.
De gouden juwelen, zo belangrijk in de hiphop-scene, kwamen tot stand door een samenwerking met de Zwitserse kunstenaar Urs Fischer:
Backstage, liet makeup artist Diane Kendall weten dat ieder model haar eigen beautylook kreeg. 'I was there when he [Jacobs] was doing the fittings, and so we looked at the girl when she was dressed and decided, "Oh she'd look good with a mouth, she'd look good with an eye," just depending on their character. Some of them are more boyish, some are more sexy, everybody's been individual.'
Eenmaal buiten liepen de modellen een stuk over de stoep om vervolgens plaats te nemen in een soort tableau vivant, al selfies en foto's van elkaar makende tot de meester himself verscheen voor de finale. Voor de final act mocht het publiek tot slot ook naar buiten om dan eindelijk die Instagram-waardige shots te maken. De opluchting.
