Hij heeft wereldwijd fans, van Azië tot Amerika, en meer dan 30.000 volgers op Instagram: Lance Walsh, een 57-jarige fruitkraamverkoper aan Berwick Street in Soho, Londen, is een ware cultheld. Wat wil het geval? Lance gaat al jaren van top tot (bijna) teen gekleed in de nieuwste gear van het populaire en razendexclusieve cultlabel Supreme.
De big break
Milo Harley, co-founder van de cult kledingshop Duke's Cupboard en straatcultuurfotograaf Ben Awin zou je kunnen zien als de ontdekkers van Lance. In een interview met Dazed laat Ben Awin weten:
'I was wandering down the street and saw Lance in a Supreme shirt and thought it was sick so took a photo of him, uploaded it on my Instagram, then it got uploaded onto some huge Instagram pages, and then it became a weekly thing.Now either me or Milo will take photos and upload it, so me and Lance became mates from there."
Maar denk vooral niet dat het Lance voorheen aan aandacht ontbrak. 'People were taking photographs before Ben,' aldus de fruitboer in kwestie aan Dazed. 'People were coming up with their kids (...) and people would take photos, and it started from there. It is funny when the parents come down though. The dads are the funniest actually. They can't work it out!'
De vraag rijst natuurlijk vooral: waar haalt deze man dit modegevoel vandaan?! Welnu, Lance was altijd al een modevogel. Zijn oma werkte vroeger als schoonmaakster in een kasjmierwinkel aan Bond Street, waar ze gratis kasjmier sokken en truien uit de samplerekken voor hem scoorde.
Lance: 'When you've had it since you were young, you get a taste for it, so suddenly you don't wanna wear Marks and Sparks jumpers anymore. That's how that started.'
En dus is Lance er regelmatig als de kippen bij als er een nieuwe 'drop' plaatsvindt in de Britse Supreme store, (lees: als er een kleine pluk nieuwe kleding en accessoires in de winkel komt te hangen die binnen mum van tijd weer uitverkoopt dankzij rijen vol wachtende tieners en twintigers voor de deur).
Gevoelig voor modegrillen is-ie opvallend genoeg niet. ('If I like something, I get it.') Dat Supreme insane populair is, is dus niet de reden dat Lance er groots inslaat. 'It is just what's comfortable to me. I only wear what I can wear on the stall everyday, like it's durable, waterproof, washes well. I wash mine more than most 'cause I wear it all the time, and the stuff is just as good as it was at the start.'
Comme Des Lance-Ons
Mocht je Lance overigens een keer in een Britse kroeg tegen het hippe lijf lopen, laat hem dan wel gewoon zijn biertje drinken. 'I don't mind having a photo here, 'cause I'm here at the stall anyway. But I don't like it if I'm in the pub or something. It gets too much.'
En vergeet niet even wat meloenen bij 'm in te slaan. 'Some of the Asian fans cry when they see me. They travel thousands of miles. And yeah they come and they buy fruit, then they ask you for a photo y'see, so it does help a bit like that.'
Zo is het, Lance. Zo is het.
