De posters en trailers voor Beauty And The Beast zijn inmiddels overal te zien, en Emma Watson lijkt de perfecte actrice voor de rol van Disney-prinses. Maar wat blijkt: zelf heeft ze daar weleens anders over gedacht.
Voordat ze de rol van Belle in Beauty And The Beast kreeg aangeboden, werd ze ook gevraagd voor de rol van Cinderella in Kenneth Branagh's remake van de Disney-klassieker. Die rol sloeg ze echter af, want ze vond de prinses geen rolmodel.
Watson in een interview met Total Film:
'I didn't know they were going to make Beauty and the Beast at the time I turned down Cinderella. But when they offered me Belle, I just felt the character resonated with me so much more than Cinderella did. She remains curious, compassionate, and open-minded. And that's the kind of woman I would want to embody as a role model, given the choice.'
In eerste instantie had Emma trouwens ook haar bedenkingen over Belle, maar samen met regisseur Bill Condon kon ze hier en daar wat aan het karakter schaven, om een meer empowering Belle te krijgen.
'In a strange way, she challenges the status quo of the place she lives in, and I found that really inspiring,' zegt Emma.
De verandering zat 'm vooral in Belle's afkomst: in plaats van haar vader, is Bélle nu de uitvinder.
Watson aan Entertainment Weekly: 'I was like, "Well, there was never very much information or detail at the beginning of the story as to why Belle didn't fit in, other than she liked books." Also, what is she doing with her time? So we created a backstory for her, which was that she had invented a kind of washing machine, so that, instead of doing laundry, she could sit and use that time to read instead. So, yeah, we made Belle an inventor.'
Wij zeggen: nog meer bewijs dat niemand anders dan Emma Watson de rol van Belle had moeten krijgen.
Beauty and the Beast draait 29 maart in de Nederlandse bioscopen.
