Let op: hieronder volgen spoilers over de allerlaatste aflevering van Pretty Little Liars. Je bent gewaarschuwd...
Inmiddels staat ook de laatste, twee uur durende aflevering van Pretty Little Liars op Netflix in Nederland en zeggen we dus voorgoed gedag tegen de langlopende serie. Zoals verwacht, ging PLL eruit with a bang.
Pretty Little Liars: het einde
We kwamen erachter dat Spencers Britse(!) tweeling A.D. was, dat Wrenn inderdaad heulde met de vijand en Toby bleek de redder van de dag toen hij door een gedicht de echte Spencer van haar gemene evenbeeld wist te scheiden. En Mona? Tja, die bleef knotsgekke Mona en houdt Alex en Mary Drake tot in de lengte van dagen gevangen in een nieuw poppenhuis in Frankrijk. Och. We hadden van Marlene King geen ander, bizar einde verwacht.
Wrenn was eigenlijk A.D.?
Maar, tot voor kort wist PLL-bedenker Marlene King niet eens hoe de serie zou eindigen. Zo verklapt ze aan Entertainment Weekly dat ze eigenlijk Wrenn Kingston als originele A.D. in gedachte had, maar dat ze daar toch vanaf zag omdat-ie geen vast castlid was. Ze legt uit:
'There have been times when we really needed a character who wasn't a series regular and we couldn't get them on the show. The show is so deeply rooted in mythology and I've always said you have to know the ending before you know the beginning or else it won't make sense, so that dictated that we needed to make A.D. someone who was a series regular.'
Maar King wist wel dat het niet een van de Liars mocht zijn, want de serie gaat juist over hun liefde voor elkaar:
'I know a lot of fans wanted it to be one of the Pretty Little Liars, but I could never justify that being true because the show was always about their unconditional friendship. That then sort of led to this idea of, well, if we make it a twin of one of the Pretty Little Liars, that's sort of like making it a PLL, but ultimately, it makes more sense.'
Daarnaast verklapt Troian Bellisario (a.k.a. Spencer/Alex Drake - die de rol van haar leven speelde in die laatste aflevering), dat het einde eigenlijk nog veel donkerder was. Aan Entertainment Tonight:
'Originally — I don't know if I'm supposed to say this — but I think originally the ending was supposed to be a little bit different where Alex had kind of gotten away with it a little bit more, and the only person that was onto her was Toby. But I think that ultimately would've left things too much up in the air and we would've been worried for Spencer. So it was really fun because this way, Spencer got a happy ending, and all the girls got a happy ending, and Alex got to be with her family — which is great, but also in a little bit of a tricky situation.'
